Linking Up the Raw Materials with Human Nature

Taking together the raw materials for the pursuit of happiness and the nature of the human as a social being, I propose that there are just four domains within which humans achieve lasting and justified satisfaction with life as a whole: work, family, community, and faith. Over the course of almost 30 years of making that claim, I have asked countless audiences to give me a fifth one that is independent of the first four. No one ever has been able to nominate a persuasive candidate (with the caveat that work doesn’t have to be paid employment).

So let’s assume that those four domains—the “institutions of meaning,” as Arthur Brooks has evocatively labeled them—are our only options.72 For one of them, faith, the UBI is probably irrelevant. I can imagine some indirect positive effects, but they are only possibilities. The great religious faiths have not flourished because of the things that the UBI facilitates. But the UBI’s interactions with work, family, and community are many and, in my judgment, are likely to have profound consequences. The UBI has the potential to revive and enrich America’s historic civil society. The next three chapters describe why.
